Why do you write fiction?
As a child, I had a vivid imagination and loved to create my own stories. When I got a little older, I read all types of fiction but mostly romance. I met several romance authors at the RWA Literacy signing in Orlando, Florida, who encouraged me to join RWA and follow my heart. I never dreamed I would be published in two years.
Please tell us about your book. What ideas or images inspired this novel?
I love reading small-town contemporary romance. Jill Shalvis, Kristan Higgins, and Roxanne St. Claire are a few of my favorites. The ideas of this novel evolved completely from a few of my personal life circumstances. My husband was finishing his medical rotations and wanted to move out of Florida. I have lived here for the past 20 years and didn’t want to leave the sunshine for the colder weather. That was the initial conflict. I love to cook like Olivia Carson, my heroine, and of course my husband is the doctor like Brady Matthews.
Do you have an ideal reader in mind when you write? If so, please describe that reader.
I try to write a book people can relate to. I think my characters are likable people with quirks and funny personalities like the families and friends we all know and love. I try not to include unrealistic goals, hopes or dreams. I like my story to have a down-to-earth feeling.
Please describe your writing routine.
I work from home, which can be a plus and minus when it comes to writing. I work at my day job in the morning then write after dinner. It can be a challenge when I’ve been on the computer for work all day to sit back down and write, but I make it work.
What advice do you give new writers just starting out?
First and foremost, I think you need to join RWA or a local writing chapter. There is so much to learn. Write what you love and enjoy to read! Don’t try to write for the latest trend. Even with the age of digital publishing, by the time you write to keep up with the trend, it’s over.
