Annette’s note: I learned today that Pepper recently passed away. In light of this news, I just wanted to re-share this author’s warmth and joy.
Why do you write fiction?
I really enjoy writing my own little world. It’s the next best thing to reading.
Please tell us about your book. What ideas or images inspired this novel?
The setting is Boggy Bayou, Louisiana, which I used in my first book, The Devil has Dimples. I so enjoyed being in ‘that place’ that I had to write another book there. Taking one of my side characters, I determined she needed someone to love, only thing is, she’s in her late sixties! Geriatric Romance… is better with age.
Do you have an ideal reader in mind when you write? If so, please describe that reader.
My ideal reader is one who enjoys a humorous story with realistic characters. I like to make my readers laugh, cry and think. If I can achieve that, then I’ll be happy.
Please describe your writing routine.
This year, my resolution was to write new words every day. I’m still working at it. I’m supposed to be retired but writing is work. I think it keeps my mind working. However, some days are better than others.
What advice do you give new writers just starting out?
Read everything you’re interested in. Read best-sellers and try to figure out what they are doing to make their writing shine. Write every day. Even if it’s only fifteen minutes. Put a steno pad and pen in the bathroom if you must, but write. And most importantly, learn craft. There are excellent articles on the internet. Having problems with scene and sequel, then search the topic and read everything you can. Become an expert. Think of it as taking a college course or getting a degree.
More about Naomi’s Heart:
Naomi Lemoine is delighted to learn that Ben Brouillette has retired to Boggy Bayou. She had a major crush on him in high school, but that was over forty years ago. He was way out of her class then, but now?
They team up to win the Egg Knocking contest in Boggy Bayou. The only problem: a nemesis who doesn’t want them to win.
Can they make it to the winning circle?
Can Naomi figure out why Ben is kissing her?
Or does she even want to know? She doesn’t want the kisses to stop. Can her heart stand it if Ben realizes that she’s not what he deserves?
